TEACHER INDUCTION
So then you made it off the plane (or the train) and to Rizhao! Hello and welcome to the city, our school and the team here. EF Rizhao is a close and friendly team and weˇll do what we can to help you settle in quickly.
Thereˇs not much to do in Rizhao to be honest, but we seem to manage rather well because we all hang out quite regularly and have some good laughs.
The beach here at Rizhao is absolutely fab and is a HUGE selling point for the city! There are long stretches of golden sand, which are kept nice and clean. Itˇs easy to get there and your apartment is only about 10 mins away from it.
Shandong food is also great, and you will be prevailed upon regularly in your first few days to join everyone for barbeque (local specialty) and other dinner dates. Itˇs also likely youˇll be either taken or dragged reluctantly (depending on your exhibitionist inclinations) to a local KTV bar! This is THE Chinese form of entertainment. Itˇs private karaoke; i.e. you sing in a room with your friends only. Iˇve never quite been able to decide if this reduces or increases the embarrassment factor, as a whole
No apartment is more than a 20 min walk from the school, so the community amenities listed below are all closely located. This being China, you will no longer take a shower at any distance from your toilet. You will fill your washing machine from a tap via hosepipe but hey, at least you have a washing machine. Donˇt worry if youˇre too hot or too cold in your apartment right now: everything is adjustable! The air cons double as heaters, so they can cool or heat your rooms as you please.
The telephone may or may not be connected to the school system. If youˇre part of the school network, you have to dial 0 before you can make an outside call. Youˇre part of the system if you have an 870 prefix. This means you can also call others in the system by dialing just the second part of the no. E.g. call the school on 2020. Otherwise you just dial as usual.
Your internet connection should already be available for use. If not, please donˇt worry! It absolutely will be connected within the next day or two. You donˇt need to worry about paying your bills; Jack, the company ˉmoney manˇ and Jack-of-all-trades, takes care of all your amenities and simply deducts the amount owed from your salary each month.
Your nearest supermarket is Xin Ma Te (pronounced Shin Ma Ter). Itˇs five mins walk from the school and is very handy for grabbing lunch. You can purchase a mobile phone here for about Y300 (or $37). The nearest Bank of China is also only a two minute walk from the school, in the opposite direction.
We highly recommend you get a mobile phone and pay-as-you-go sim card. China Mobile has a branch next to the school. Most teachers rely on calling the school for advice or translation, particularly for the first few months.
Directly across the road from the school you can catch the local buses for just Y1 or Y1.5.
No 11 takes you to the train station, the Western shopping part of town and BBQ Street.
No 18 takes you to the large market area of town (Tai Yang Cheng) and the main bus depot.
Courses
The following courses are run at EF Rizhao during the usual season. They are taught weekly (usually one lesson a week). ACH = academic contact hour (40 mins).

Lessons are usually split as follows:
Early Learner: 2 x 30 min sections, with a two minute break between.
High flyer: 2 x ach sections, with a 15 min break halfway.
All others: 2 x one hour sections, with a 15 min halfway.
The length of the courses usually means that you have three lessons to complete each chapter or unit depending on the book you are teaching..
High Flyers and Trailblazers courses are divided into five levels of ability (1 = lowest, 5 = highest) and split into two halves, A and B. Students who complete the A course, then return, become B students.
E.g. TB3As would move into a TB3B class.
TB = course (Trailblazers) - 3 = ability level (midway of five) - A or B = first or second course at that level.
Other classes
We also run VIP (one-to-one) courses for students wanting individual tuition. Length of courses and classes will be decided on with the student before beginning the course.
We have also run ESP (English for Special Purposes) classes as and when they come up. Eg: Preparation for University Entrance Examinations and Preparation for IELTS.
During peak seasons we will also run many different intensive classes, including, but not limited to Reading, Literacy and Phonics for Younger Learners and Conversation Courses for teenagers and Adults.

You can get to Beijing, Tianjin, Jinan, Tai¡’an, Zhengzhou, and Xinxiang by train from Rizhao, and travel by bus to Qingdao, Weifang, Zibo, Linyi, and Lianyungang in Jiangsu province.
If you’re fond of hiking take bus nr 11 or 18 into the mountain direction. Get off at the last bus stop and just go ahead. It’s a nice few hours trip. To reach the highest mountain you must pass through two smaller hills. At the summit there is Chinese Navy so it’s rather the matter of luck if they let you get there (you can always ask for toilet it works ) so you can have better view on the area. Anyway it’s worth to go there.

Bamboo Park - located in West of Rizhao. Take bus nr 18 from the school and get off at the long distance bus station (this is the last bus stop). Then change for bus nr 15, which will take you directly to the park (get off at the last bus stop). Entrance Y 20. (pretty nice)
Forest Park take bus nr 10, and get off at the last bus stop. Then take another bus (no number, something written in Chinese) which goes further, I mean to the forest park. Entrance Y40 (so-so).
